No Madison Goose Kill - (Facebook page)

"It is the practice of roundups, more than anything else, that has divided communities. It is believed by many who care for geese and the environment to be unnecessary, illogical, and inhumane...When The HSUS advocates life-affirming solutions as the only reasonable response to the problems people sometimes have with Canada geese, we do so as much to affirm our own lives as theirs." - Humane Society of the United States (HSUS)

this site is lovingly dedicated to the geese of Warner Park

Q: why do they want to kill the geese?

A: in 2007, some of the geese that happened to be at warner park were banded. since 2007, about ten of these banded geese have been killed on airport property, out of almost 70 total geese killed there in the same time. the wildlife biologist consulting for the airport thinks this identifies warner as a "feeder population" and has recommended that the airport ask permission from the city to kill the entire goose population at warner park.

Q: can't we apply non-lethal methods and acheive the same end?

A: of course. everyone knows we can! there are literally hundreds of methods to chase geese away and keep them from coming back, and these methods are mostly what the airport uses on their land. a lot of these methods have been shown to be a LOT more effective than killing geese! but the wildlife biologist for the airport has told them they need to kill the geese. so if they don't take that route, the FAA could claim they're not complying with their own management plan, which airport managers are afraid might open them up to being sued if a plane did hit a goose. but if the city doesn't give the airport permission to kill the geese, they will have done all they can do to follow their plan, and the FAA will be satisfied.

Q: should we call PETA?

A: someone did. they actually weren't interested - "Thank you for your compassion! PETA focuses on animals on factory farms, animals raised for their hides, those being tortured in laboratories, and animals held captive and cruelly exploited for entertainment. Please allow me to refer you to an organization equipped to handle wildlife issues, and that’s the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). Their wildlife assistance hotline is 203-389-4411" - they refer people to HSUS
